Primary Research for my Opening

Kieran Panchal

Although romance is not my preferred genre, I like the narrative that Grace has proposed for her opening. Firstly, the title idea is very suited to the plot and therefore they work effectively together. Also, the entire production seems completely achievable, as there are no complexities in terms of character and setting etc. Also due to this, the opening will look more realistic as it will resemble day to day routine of the characters better, also making the overall feel of the opening more realistic.

Nathan Rawlings

I like the story structure that Grace has chosen for her film. The films seems as if it can blend genres such as comedy and romance together in order to engage a larger target audience. The story seems grounded and will be easily achievable in order to capture the full extent of her vision, while allowing audiences to relate to the story and characters.

Dylan Mann-Hazell

I think the storyline for this film idea has great potential and could end up being quite controversial in terms of being a romance film. I can see how Grace can film this with ease, and by the sounds of it, it has great potential to earn a high grade. Also, due to the age of the protagonist, the target audience for this type of film could branch out to more than one audience, which is a good idea.

Scarlett Christou

I like the storyline and think that the title of the film suits it very well. It establishes genre well and ends on a cliffhanger in order to create enigmas for the audience. It will not be too complicated to film and can be easily achievable but at the same time include a lot of conventions of a romance film.

Emma Blake

I think this shows your genre very well and is an engaging start to your film. I think although it is a simple idea i think it will be effective in making a good opening. I also think people can relate to the characters which will help draw people into watching your film. There are also many conventions of romance films in your opening alone making the genre clear to everyone.

Gracie Tobias

I think that the idea of this film opening is unique and i would personally make an effort to go see this film if it was in cinema. i feel that this is a film that i would typically watch and one which i would be interested in. I believe that this would make an intriguing opening as it doesn't give much away and doesn't allow the view to guess any of the plot like some dilm opening do. Also i love the film title as i think that it would catch my attention if i saw the name or a poster opt the film and want me to find out more.

Plans for Shooting

Hair and Makeup

Main Female Character- her hair will be down and very simple with nothing in her hair her make up will be very natural and hardly noticeable to give her a sense of innocence that is need. This will be done at home as the make up will need to be done the actress so she is comfortable with the make up she is wearing.

Main Male Character- his hair will be styled to look like the following picture

this will be done at home by the actor but then I will provide gel at the filming location so that we can keep it looking the same and so it doesn't become to static and stuck to his face, the gel will be used to keep the volume in the hair. No make up will be used on his face however I will use foundation on his hand to blend the tattoo sleeve into his hand to make it look like the tattoo's are real.

Extras-

Female- The female extras will have both simple hair styles, either down or in a ponytail. Their make up will not be over the top as it would not fit the story line as they are at a college.

Male- The male extras will have hair that has been styled either at home or on set, depending on whether or not their have gel at home, it will be styles in a similar way to the male leads.

Costumes

Main Female Character-  A simple look consisting of a plaid shirt with a black top underneath with blue  jeans and a pair of Timberlands, she will wear a simple plain pair of earrings and a simple chain necklace. This outfit will come from the actresses wardrobe.

Main Male Character - He will wear a simple grunge look consisting of a plain black t-shirt to show the tattoo sleeve and grey jeans and have converse shoes on. This outfit will come from the actors wardrobe apart from the tattoo sleeve which will be provided by me.

Extras- Extras will wear simple clothing such as jeans and t-shirt to give the setting a feel of being in a college, these costumes will be provided by the extras.

Lighting

The lighting at my location is good apart from at the bottom of the stairs as there is no lights there only a fire exit door which is all windows so while filming here I will need to take lights with me to allow me to get the right kind of light that I need within the scene. While filming outside the area is not very dark and the lighting is good however if I film there too late in the day, after sunset, then the lighting will be wrong and I will have to go back and film it again on a different day as it will too hard to make the area look like it is during the day, so I need to make sure that I am able to film the outside piece before it gets to dark

Props

The props that will be used within my opening will be very basic, props such as a handbag/school bag for the female characters and then rucksacks for the male characters. The main character will also be hold a folder that I will bring from home. In my opening there is a scene where the main male character is selling drugs so a small plastic packet will be provided and it will look like it is filled with drugs however it will just be talcum powder.

Constructing an opening

My Opening

A girl is searching round the college trying to find her friends. She ends up falling up the stairs and lands at the feet of the leader of the college's bad boys. He surprises her by helping her to her feet, making sure she is okay and asking her out on a date. She is unsure whether to accept or not due to the rumours she has heard about him.

How it engages my audience

My opening engages my audience because it is based in a place recognisable to most people and is about a topic that many people will have either dealt with or will have seen people dealing with. My opening creates enigma codes such as, Who is the Boy and what has he done to get this bad reputation from?, it also creates questions that will last throughout the whole film such as, Will the get together? and Will she ever fall in love with him?.
The opening will also engage my audience because there is a crisis involved and people will want to see if the crisis can be resolved and see if what they want to happen will actually happen this keeps them watching and it keeps them engaged with the film as it continues.
My opening contains convention that would normally be found in a romance film. I will establish who my main characters are to allow the audience to understand who the film is about and how they have met, this allows that audience to really get involved in the relationship between the characters as they are watching the relationship between the 2 main characters grow

Re: Copyright Permission

Dear Mr Lau and Mr Nalbet

My name is Grace Cambridge and I live in Essex in the UK where I am studying A levels at Harlow College. I have chosen Media as one of my A levels and am currently completing coursework requirements where I have an assignment to make a 2-minute film opening.

My chosen genre is romance and I would very much like to use the music of The American Authors as the soundtrack to this opening as I feel that it would be best suited for my film. I would like to use either the track “Trouble” or “Love” as I feel they will both fit well with my film opening sequence. I am a huge fan of the band and have seen them play live twice, once in Camden and once, more recently, at Embankment. I also had the pleasure of meeting the band after one of their gigs.

The film opening will only be used as the main part of my coursework and being able to use either of these tracks would mean a lot to me. I feel one of these song would not only be the best fit for my film opening but also be personal to me as a fan of the band. The music would not be used for commercial purposes and a completed copy of the film opening would be sent to you when it is finished.

Thank you for taking the time to consider my request in this matter and I await your response

Yours Sincerely

Grace Cambridge
