What kind of media institutions might distribute your media product and why?
When deciding which production company would produce my film and which company would distribute my film there are different things to consider. I have to consider the types of films they have produced or distributed in the past. As my film is a romance film it would make no sense to ask a company such as Twisted Pictures to produce my film when they only work in the horror section of the industry therefore the companies I choose must have past experience in producing and distributing romance film. This is important because the company will have experience in the romance genre, they will also have a audience who have been to see their romance films before meaning that the film will get watched. Using a well known company would mean that the film would already have an established audience whereas if the film was produced by an independent film company it wouldn't have an established audience and this could be risky because it could mean that there would be no one going to watch the film meaning it would make a lose when you want to make a profit.
I would use a company that is well know for creating romance films because they would already have an established audience for the film so this would mean that people already know what kinds of thing to expect from the films that the company produce and would know that they like about the film that the company has produced. By having a company that has a established audience it means that the film would get watched and therefore has a better chance of either breaking even or making a profit.
The production company I would choose would be Screen Gems because they have produced films such as 'The Vow', 'Dear John' and 'Friends with Benefits'. Screen Gems have helped produced many different film and they have made a reasonable profit, for example 'The Vow' had an estimated budget of $30,000,000 and in the opening weekend at the box office made $41,202,458. This film made a profit and I feel like this would be the right choice for my film because it would get it out to a wider audience meaning it would be watched by more people and would make a larger profit, however the downside of having Screen Gems produce my film is that they don't specialise just in romance films they produce films from all different genres so that they might not know all of the genre conventions meaning that the film may not be as popular among the target audience.
I would choose 20th Century Fox to distribute my film as they have distributed many different romance films that have be successes for example, Titanic, The Fault in Our Stars and This Means War. By having this company distribute my film they would know the kind of techniques that worked well when they have previously promoted romance films and they will also know what types of social media worked well with the promotion of their romance films. The only downside of using this distribution company is that they distribute many different genres of film and this may mean that they are not as up to date with distribution of romance films.
