Importance of Genre

Importance of genre

Genre is important for production companies because it helps them establish the things that people expect to see with in a certain film, for example in a romance film people would expect to see a couple get together at the end and different dates featured in the movies or in a crime film people would expect to see policemen and to see some sort of crime to take place. Genre helps the production companies because it tells them exactly what to put in their movies, all they have to do is make them fit the movie they are trying to create. Production companies would also use genre to know exactly who their target audience are, so they know they type of people who are going to watch their films, the target audience for a romance films are primarily women because they are the people that you would expect to see watching romance films. By knowing who their target audience is this makes the job of the production company easier because they know what kind of things those people want to  watch, for  example if a production company wanted to make a romance film for teenagers they would set it in the modern day rather than a long time ago because period romance films would not appeal to teenagers as much as  modern day romance film would, this is because it is relatable to them and they will find it easier to understand as they may have gone through some of the issues faced by the characters in the film.

Genre is important for audience as well because it allows them to recognise a films of certain genres and know if they want to watch it. Audience will recognise a films genre without even realising that they are, for example when people see a film poster with a man and a women looking into each others eyes, the audience will automatically assume that the film is a romance film because that is one of the things they associate with romance films, however if the audience saw a poster with a black background and just a person wearing a mask that would instantly suggests to the people that the film is a horror.

The audience use genre to understand the kind of thing they will see within the film, such as couples in a romance film or a weapon in a crime film or a fight scene in an action film all of these things help the audience to understand whether or not they will like the film, as there is no point paying money to see a film when as soon as a murder happens the audience freak out because the poster lead them to think that the film is a romance.

For My Opening

Genre for my opening means that I know what kinds of things to feature in my opening. Genre also helped my understand the kind of stories to include in my planning ideas as I knew who I wanted to aim my film at. Genre will also help me decide what props to use, the setting, costumes and make up and lighting. The fact that my genre is already established means that I already have an established target audience of people who know what they want to see and what they expect, I am therefore not trying to entice people to come and watch my film because it already has an established audience. Genre also means that for my opening I what kinds of Romance did well at the box office and what didn't but it also tells me what films my audience liked and ones they didn't this helps me know exactly what kind of film my target audience would want to see rather than a film that has been 10 times before and my audience really don't want to see anymore.  Genre also allows me to understand things that are typical of romance films and things that aren't so I know what to include in my opening. Genre also allows me to understand the story ideas that my target audience like and the ones that they don't so I can come up with ideas that my target audience will like.
